Strengthening Families

Does your child shy away from social situations or isolate themselves because of their inability to communicate effectively?

Your child may benefit from supplemental speech language therapy

  • Your child’s delays may be mild so they don’t qualify for speech therapy services through the school system, but you feel like your child still needs services to be successful
  • Your child is missing academic classroom time to receive speech therapy at school
  • Your child responds better to individualized therapy vs. group therapy
  • Your child is not progressing as quickly as you would like
  • You would like to be more closely involved in your child’s therapy
  • You want to encourage your child to read and comprehend more effectively. Issues with reading such as dyslexia may require a more intensive approach. Speech Therapy can help your child to hear and distinguish specific sounds in words. This can improve reading comprehension skills and encourage kids to read

Speech Language Therapy has two goals. First is to teach your child skills to speak with clarity. And second, is to teach them the language skills to communicate effectively. Some of the skills taught include:

  • How to articulate words well
  • How to communicate both verbally and nonverbally
  • How to comprehend verbal and nonverbal communication and to know the appropriate time and place to communicate
  • How to become an active participant in conversations
  • How to exchange their ideas, thoughts, dreams  and how to use communication to develop relationships

The Benefits of early Intervention and Supplemental Services.

Did you know that 1 in 10 children have a speech related issue that can be addressed with early intervention? Speech therapy can help kids learn to speak more clearly. This helps them feel more confident and less frustrated about speaking to others. Kids who have language issues can benefit socially, emotionally and academically from speech therapy.

  • Reduces Social Isolation. Often when communication pathways are underdeveloped a child will feel socially isolated. They may find it difficult to interact with other children and family members. With therapy a child learns how to use language to express themselves. These skills allow them to develop friendships more easily and improve relationships with family.
  • Promotes Good Behavior. Social isolation can also lead to challenging behavior. A child who feels isolated, can be frustrated and may act out.  A child may begin biting or hitting in order to express themselves. The most rapid improvement occurs when a child is surrounded by a support system that works with them on a daily basis.
  • Creates a Foundation for Future Success. The ability to communicate is the foundation of a child’s future success. Strong communication and language skills allow a child to create, imagine, dream and read and write creating a solid platform for future success.

Speech Language Associates provides support not only to the child but also to the parents.  We can provide information, tools and training to build your confidence and allow the family to develop a greater understanding of the child’s learning requirements. Children in an environment where they are surrounded by people who work with them daily to improve their communication and language skills show the most rapid improvement.
